Thomas, J. B., Conner, R. L. and Graf, R. J. 2012. Radiant hard red winter wheat. Can. J. Plant Sci. 92: 169 175. Radiant hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is well adapted to the non-hazard region for stem rust (Puccinia graminis Pers.: Pers. f. sp. tritici Eriks. & E. Henn.) within the Canadian prairies. Based on evaluation relative to Norstar, CDC Osprey, AC Tempest and AC Bellatrix in the Western Winter Wheat Cooperative registration trials, Radiant was similar in grain yield to AC Bellatrix, the highest yielding check. Radiant displayed very good winter survival, relatively late maturity, moderate height, very strong straw, high test weight and large seeds. It is the first Canadian wheat cultivar with resistance to colonization by the wheat curl mite (Aceria tosichella Keifer), the sole vector of wheat streak mosaic. Radiant was also shown to have good resistance to the prevalent races of stripe rust. It is susceptible to stem rust, leaf rust and common bunt. Radiant is eligible for all grades of the Canada Western Red Winter (CWRW) wheat class, having demonstrated a desirable combination of grain protein content, milling properties, dough functionality and baking performance. It has gained widespread commercial acceptance, particularly in Alberta.

Comparison of bloat potential between a variety of soft-red versus a variety of hard-red winter wheat forage.
Some aspects of wheat pasture bloat have been researched extensively, but few studies have evaluated the effect of wheat type or variety on bloat. Eight Gelbvieh x Angus ruminally cannulated heifers (515 +/- 49 kg of BW) and 48 Angus heifers (238 +/- 12 kg of BW) grazed 1-ha pastures of hard-red or soft-red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to evaluate the effect of wheat variety on bloat pot...

A quantitative trait locus (QTL) controlling wheat grain protein content (GPC) and flour protein content (FPC) was identified using doubled haploid (DH) lines developed from a cross between the hard red winter wheat variety 'Yumechikara' with a high protein content used for bread making, and the soft red winter wheat 'Kitahonami' with a low protein content used for Japanese white salted noodles...

Influence of commodity type, percentage of cracked kernels, and wheat class on population growth of stored-product psocids (Psocoptera: Liposcelidae).
Differences in stored-product psocid progeny production as a function of commodity type, percentage of cracked kernels, and wheat class were examined using laboratory bioassays. Population growth of Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel, Liposcelis decolor (Pearman), Liposcelis paeta Pearman, and Liposcelis entomophila (Enderlein) (Psocoptera: Liposcelididae) was highest on sorghum Sorghum bicolor...

Journal of Plant Registrations, Vol. 3, No. 1, January 2009 51 W heat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) is one of the most common, and devastating, diseases impacting wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the western Great Plains of North America. Annual production losses of 5% have been estimated, although severe local WSMV infection can result in complete crop failure (French and Stenger, Regis...
